Revealing the subtyping of non‐small cell lung cancer based on genomic evolutionary patterns by multi‐region sequencing

Cancer Medicine Oct 23, 2020

Liao G, Liang X, Ping Y, et al. - Since a systematic study of how to accurately classify patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) based on tumor evolution has never been attempted, researchers re-examined the TRACERx (Tracking Non‐Small‐Cell Lung Cancer Evolution through Therapy) data to reconstruct phylogenetic links of somatic mutations in 100 early NSCLC patients (327 lesions). Three evolutionary subtypes of NSCLC patients were defined. Experts integrated genomic heterogeneity with clinical phenotypes analysis and identified that progression as well as deterioration of the tumor was due to subclonal expansion. Across the evolutionary subtypes, difference in the molecular mechanisms of subtype‐specific Early Driver Feature genes was evident, reflecting the features of the subtype itself. Overall, this work affords novel insights on the stratification of NSCLC patients on the basis of genomic evolution.
