Retrospective validation of the postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) criteria in a Japanese cohort
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 10, 2019
Shiraki A, et al. - The performance of the new screening criteria for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) developed in the Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) study externally validated among a Japanese cohort. At a single institute, premature infants screened for ROP were reviewed. They applied the G-ROP criteria, except hydrocephalus, as a prediction model for 537 infants who had both a known outcome of ROP and serial measurements of weight gain, among 692 premature infants screened for ROP. In a developed country other than North America, this is the first validation study of the G-ROP criteria. In this Japanese cohort, the G-ROP model demonstrated high sensitivity, even though the criterion of hydrocephalus was excluded. The criteria reached a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 28.9%. The criteria would have led to a reduction in the number of infants requiring screening and the number of examinations by 24.5% and 12.9%, respectively.
