Retrospective evaluation of pregnancies with ankylosing spondylitis in a tertiary center in Turkey
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Nov 21, 2019
Unal C, et al. - In this retrospective study of 52 individuals with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who were followed up at an institution between 2006 and 2019, experts assessed obstetrical and perinatal outcomes of pregnancies with AS. Thirty-three of the cases were followed up without any medication, while 19 used drugs during pregnancy. Seven individuals used a single drug and 12 had multiple drugs. No important variation in terms of obstetrical and neonatal outcomes was noted. Nonetheless, in the group using medication for AS, irrespective of a lack of statistical importance, a greater rate of neonatal ICU (NICU) admission was noticed. Notwithstanding a lack of statistical importance, individuals having disease more than 5 years had greater rates of Apgar scores less than < 7 and admission to the NICU. In summary, pregnancies of women with AS must be acknowledged as high risk because of raised rates of adverse outcomes like preterm delivery, intrauterine growth retardation or preeclampsia.
