Retrospective cohort study of rates of return emergency department visits among patients transported home by ambulance
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 19, 2020
Munjal KG, Shastry S, Chapin H, et al. - Researchers examined whether the rates of return emergency department (ED) visits and readmission were higher for patients transported home by ambulance vs similar patients transported home by other means. For this retrospective cohort study, they identified 207 patients aged 65 and over who were transported home by ambulance and 162 patients as matched controls at a US tertiary care academic hospital. They noted statistically significant higher rate of 30-day ED returns for the exposed group vs the matched controls. Findings suggest that irrespective of established readmission risk factors, transport home via ambulance after hospital discharge could be a predictive factor of a high risk of recidivism.
