Results from the US cohort of the HORIZON Trial: A randomized study of a Schlemm’s canal micro-stent for reduction of IOP in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Apr 04, 2019
Jones J, et al. - In the prospective, multicenter, single-masked, randomized, controlled clinical trial, researchers investigated the safety and efficacy of Schlemm’s canal stenting in combination with cataract surgery to decrease IOP. They randomized 219 eyes to microstent implantation and 112 to phaco alone. They noticed a decline in unmedicated diurnal IOP (DIOP) by ≥20% in the microstent group (78.5% vs 54.5%) at 24 months. They also recorded a significant decline in medication usage with implantation of a Schlemm’s canal microstent following phacoemulsification vs phacoemulsification alone in outpatients with mild to moderate severity POAG. Overall, they concluded the combination procedure similar to cataract surgery alone in terms of visual acuity results and ocular adverse event rate.
