Restless legs syndrome is a relevant comorbidity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
International Journal of Colorectal Disease Apr 11, 2018
Becker J, et al. - The prevalence and severity of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients were investigated. Researchers also ascertained the effect of iron and/or folic acid/vitamin B12 supplementation in these patients. Findings revealed that in IBD, the overall prevalence of RLS did not differ when compared to the general population. However, IBD patients showed clinically relevant RLS more frequently and, therefore, it is important for clinicians to be aware of RLS symptoms. A neurologist consultation is recommended for definite diagnosis and proper treatment of RLS. Furthermore, RLS symptoms could be improved with iron supplementation of IBD patients.
