Resource utilization and outcomes in isolated low-grade renal trauma at a level 1 trauma center
Urology Apr 07, 2021
Iyer V, Gause E, Vavilala MS, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study with the aim to determine admission and transfer patterns of isolated low-grade renal trauma as there are no evidence based guidelines. Patients with low grade renal trauma were identified from 2005 to 2018 and an Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS) < 3 for non-abdominal categories was used to ensure that intensive care unit admission/hospital transfer was due to renal trauma (n = 87). For floor (n = 31) and ICU (n = 46) patients, mean age of 33 (IQR = 20) and 42 (IQR = 46) years was recorded, respectively. Observations revealed expedient ICU discharge, low transfusion rate, and low complication rate, hence, for patients under 65 years, inter-hospital transfer and ICU admission are unnecessary. They suggest the necessity for transfer and admission protocols for isolated renal trauma to avert resource overutilization.
