Resistin is a novel marker for postoperative pain intensity
Anesthesia & Analgesia Feb 25, 2019
Hozumi J, et al. - Researchers assessed the association of 3 major adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, and resistin) and 2 nonspecific proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin-6), with postoperative pain intensity in 57 patients with postlaparotomy pain. They analyzed 45 single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the adipokines. In the remaining 36 patients, serum levels of the adipokines and proinflammatory cytokines were determined. The factors related to postoperative pain were determined via a stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Findings revealed an association of a genetic variant of resistin (rs3745367) and of serum resistin levels, with postoperative pain intensity. No such link was found for other adipokines and cytokines. In postoperative wounds, the inflammatory responses could be altered by resistin, although it could serve as a determinant factor that is independent of inflammatory processes. Resistin could be a new marker for postoperative pain intensity.
