Resection of the primary tumor improves survival in patients with gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms with liver metastases: A SEER-based analysis
Cancer Medicine Jul 28, 2019
Zheng M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the efficacy of primary tumor resection (PTR) in gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms patients with liver metastases. From the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, they included 1547 patients; of these, 897 patients had undergone PTR. They observed prolonged survival in all patients and improved 5-year overall survival(OS) rates in patients with gastric, small intestinal, colorectal, and pancreatic subtypes in correlation to resection of the primary tumor. However, they recommend carefully considering the surgical recipients. For OS, old age, gastric tumor location, and poor differentiation were risk factors that might help surgeons to identify patients who could benefit from PTR.
