Requirement for urgent tracheal intubation after traumatic injury: A retrospective analysis of 11,010 patients in the Trauma Audit Research Network database
Anaesthesia May 13, 2019
Crewdson K, et al. - Using the Trauma Audit and Research Network database, researchers retrospectively reviewed emergency airway practice in patients admitted to major trauma centres in England between 01 April 2012 and 27 June 2016. They focused on any unmet demand in major trauma patients. Airway interventions performed in 11,010 patients were analyzed; including cases with tracheas intubated in the pre-hospital setting (n=4375, 43%) or in the emergency department (n=5889, 57%). Among the overall emergency department tracheal intubations, over 70% were performed within 30 min of hospital arrival, which indicates a possible unmet demand in pre-hospital advanced airway management for trauma patients in England.
