Reproductive safety of second-generation antipsychotics: Updated data from the Massachusetts general hospital National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Aug 08, 2021
Viguera AC, Freeman MP, Góez-Mogollón L, et al. - Assessment of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) as a class using data from the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics suggests that possibly no major teratogenic effect is induced by SGAs.
Prospective follow-up of women, aged 18–45 years, with histories of psychiatric illness was done through pregnancy and during the postpartum period.
Confirmed major malformations were reported among 2.50% of live births in the exposure group and among 1.99% of live births in the control group.
Comparing exposed and unexposed infants, the estimated odds ratio for major malformations was 1.48.
The pertinent information gained may facilitate women and their health care providers in decision making concerning atypical antipsychotic use during pregnancy.
