Reproductive safety of second-generation antipsychotics: Updated data from the Massachusetts general hospital National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics

The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Aug 08, 2021

Viguera AC, Freeman MP, Góez-Mogollón L, et al. - Assessment of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) as a class using data from the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics suggests that possibly no major teratogenic effect is induced by SGAs.

  • Prospective follow-up of women, aged 18–45 years, with histories of psychiatric illness was done through pregnancy and during the postpartum period.

  • Confirmed major malformations were reported among 2.50% of live births in the exposure group and among 1.99% of live births in the control group.

  • Comparing exposed and unexposed infants, the estimated odds ratio for major malformations was 1.48.

  • The pertinent information gained may facilitate women and their health care providers in decision making concerning atypical antipsychotic use during pregnancy.
