Repeated resection for recurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A retrospective German multicentre study

Liver International Oct 07, 2020

Bartsch F, Eberhard J, Rückert F, et al. - Since resection of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is frequently followed by tumor recurrence, researchers here examined the feasibility and survival of repeated resection of ICC recurrence via a retrospective multicenter cohort study. From 18 German hepato‐pancreatico‐biliary centers, they retrieved data of 156 patients who had repeated exploration for recurrent ICC, 113 of whom underwent re‐resection. Following were identified to be significant determinants of repeated resectability: CA19‐9 before primary resection, R status of first liver resection, and median time to recurrence. Outcomes indicated satisfactory morbidity and mortality after undergoing repeated resection of ICC. The procedure appeared to be linked with improved long‐term survival. They emphasize structured follow‐up after resection of ICC for early recognition of these patients.
