Repeat thoracentesis in hepatic hydrothorax and non-hepatic hydrothorax effusions: A case-control study
Respiration Jul 16, 2018
Shojaee S, et al. - Researchers investigated the risk profile for repeat thoracentesis for symptom control in patients with refractory hepatic hydrothorax (HH). At a single center, they compared complication frequency and nature during repeat thoracentesis in patients with and without HH from 2010 to 2015. They also reviewed records to obtain information on demographics, laboratory values, number of thoracentesis, and associated complications with each procedure. They concluded that repeat thoracentesis is an overall low-risk procedure. However, they found that HH vs non-HH patients had a higher complication rate. In the HH population, the risk of future complications was found to be significantly amplified in the presence of a previous complication.
