Reoperation rates for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women undergoing a mid-urethral sling in academic centers within the United States

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 25, 2018

Cantrell AB, et al. - This study was performed to determine the reoperation rates for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women who underwent a primary mid-urethral sling with or without concurrent POP repair. Researchers recognized this study as one of the largest cohort studies performed on the surgical outcomes of mid-urethral slings with or without prolapse repair surgery. Findings revealed a lower overall reoperation rate, however, the addition of prolapse repair surgery with the initial sling procedure was linked to higher reoperation rates. In some patients, on the other hand, the addition of a hysterectomy lowered the risk of secondary surgery. The data thereby provided a clearer understanding of reoperative rates for patients undergoing mid-urethral sling placement with or without prolapse repair.
