Renal function markers and insulin sensitivity after 3 years in a healthy cohort, the EGIR-RISC Study

BMC Nephrology Jun 07, 2018

Simeon S, et al. - Researchers used men and women from the European Group for the study of Insulin Resistance - Relationship between Insulin Sensitivity and Cardiovascular disease cohort to test their theory that, in a healthy population, baseline renal function relates to insulin sensitivity three years later. No links were seen with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in men at baseline, while, a positive association with urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) in these subjects had some evidence. Though not always statistically significant, the same negative trend was shown by all insulin sensitivity indices across eGFR classes in women. Those with higher baseline UACR had higher year-3 insulin sensitivity, and this was reported for both men and women. Overall, no evidence was found supporting the theory that markers of poorer renal function are linked with declining insulin sensitivity in a healthy population.
