Remote electrical neuromodulation (REN) relieves acute migraine: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain May 15, 2019
Yarnitsky D, et al. - Via conducting a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study, researchers evaluated the effectiveness and safety of a remote electrical neuromodulation device for the acute treatment of migraine. In this multicenter study, they randomized 252 adults meeting the International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria for migraine with 2-8 migraine headaches per month, in a 1:1 ratio to active or sham stimulation. Compared to placebo, superior clinically meaningful relief of migraine pain and the most bothersome symptoms was achieved with REN (38.8% vs 66.7%). Hence it is suggested to be a safe and effective non-pharmacological alternative for acute migraine treatment.
