Remission of type 2 diabetes following a short-term intervention with insulin glargine, metformin and dapagliflozin
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism May 19, 2020
McInnes N, Hall S, Sultan F, et al. - Researchers carried out an open-label randomized controlled trial to investigate diabetes remission following a short-term intensive metabolic intervention combining lifestyle and glucose-lowering approaches. The sample consisted of 154 individuals with type 2 diabetes up to 8 years in duration on 0-2 glucose-lowering medications. Study participants were randomized to a 12-week intensive intervention comprising lifestyle approaches and treatment with insulin glargine, metformin and dapagliflozin or standard diabetes care. The primary result of 24-week diabetes remission wasn't statistically significantly different. However, the overall results indicate that some patients with early type 2 diabetes may achieve sustained remission of diabetes after a short-term intensive intervention. To refine the combined therapeutic approach used, further studies are needed.
