Reliability of clinical diagnosis of masses of the cerebellopontine angle: A retrospective multi-institutional study
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Feb 01, 2019
Luryi AL, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, investigators analyzed the accuracy of pre-operative diagnosis of masses of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) vs surgical pathology among subjects who underwent surgery for CPA masses at two tertiary care institutions. They observed concordance of 57.9% for masses except for vestibular schwannoma. High positive and negative predictive values were recorded for the prediction of vestibular schwannoma and meningioma. They observed sensitivity of 0.13 and positive predictive value of 0.25 for facial neuroma prediction. A significant association of headache and facial weakness was noticed with different pathologic profiles. They also found a relationship between hearing loss and variations in diagnostic prediction but not with differences in surgical pathology.
