Relative survival after aortic valve surgery in patients with bicuspid aortic valves
Heart Feb 26, 2021
Glaser N, Jackson V, Eriksson P, et al. - Researchers aimed at analyzing the long-term relative survival in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) who underwent aortic valve surgery. A total of 865 patients with BAVs were studied who underwent participation in three prospective cohort studies of elective, open-heart, aortic valve surgery. The Human Mortality Database was assessed to obtain the expected survival for the age, gender and calendar year-matched general Swedish population. Patients with BAV exhibit excellent survival following aortic valve surgery that was similar to that noted for the general population. Findings affirm the preciseness of the timing of surgery according to current guidelines, which provides robust long-term survival rates, as well as yields important information concerning the natural history of BAV in patients following aortic valve surgery.
