Relationships between retinopathy of prematurity without ophthalmologic intervention and neurodevelopment and vision at 2 years
Pediatric Research Oct 27, 2021
Brumbaugh JE, Bell EF, Hirsch SC, et al. - Compared with children without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), those with ROP stage ≤3 without intervention had no adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years’ corrected age but had an increased incidence of strabismus.
In this secondary analysis of a randomized trial assessing the impacts of myo-inositol on ROP in the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) Neonatal Research Network, 506 children were included.
Among participants, there was absence of ROP in 173 (34%), presence of ROP stage ≤3 without intervention in 262 (52%), and ROP with intervention in 71 (14%).
In terms of motor, cognitive, or language scores, no difference was found between children with ROP stage ≤3 without intervention and children without ROP.
