Relationship between the types of urinary incontinence, handgrip strength, and pelvic floor muscle strength in adult women
Neurourology and Urodynamics May 27, 2021
Soytas RB, Soytas M, Danacioglu YO, et al. - Researchers aimed at examining the correlation between handgrip strength with types of urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS) in women. They conducted a cross-sectional study including 92 women, who presented to the geriatric and urology outpatient clinics complaining of UI between July 2019 and February 2020 and had indicated to undergo urodynamic assessment after basic neurourological evaluation. Among these women, 38 reported urodynamic stress, 28 detrusor overactivity, 26 urodynamic mixed UI. No correlation between the types of urinary incontinence and HGS was identified. However, they noted that handgrip strength (HGS) and PFMS were positively correlated which suggests a possible predictive value of low HGS for PFMS weakness. In addition, this condition may explain the correlation between sarcopenia and UI.
