Relationship between serum level of GDF8, GDF11 and bone mineral density in girls with anorexia nervosa
Clinical Endocrinology Oct 08, 2018
Wu Y, et al. – In this study, researchers assessed the relationship between growth factor differentiation 9 (GDF8, or myostatin), GDF11, and bone mineral density in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa (AN). In girls aged 12-16 years with (n=25) and without (n=31) AN, they determined serum GDF8, GDF11, and BMD. Compared with those without AN, girls with AN had lower GDF8 levels and higher GDF11 levels. The investigators did not observe any relationship between GDF8 and BMD. Overall, study findings indicated that, in girls with AN, GDF11 was an independent predictor of BMD, suggesting that GDF11 may adversely impact bone mass.
