Relationship between protein-energy wasting in adults with chronic hemodialysis and the response to treatment with erythropoietin
BMC Nephrology Aug 25, 2019
González-Ortiz A, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers analyzed patients on hemodialysis (HD) from January to December 2014, to assess the link between protein energy wasting (PEW) and response to Erythropoietin (EPO). The groups with and without PEW were compared using descriptive statistics. The follow-up was completed in 61 patients. Basal hemoglobin, hematocrit and other hematopoiesis markers were similar between the groups. PEW was identified as an incremental predictor of poor responsiveness to EPO in HD patients. Therefore, in order to achieve a favorable response to EPO treatment, correcting malnutrition or wasting is crucial.
