Relationship between multimorbidity, demographic factors and mortality: Findings from the UK Biobank cohort
BMC Medicine Apr 14, 2019
Jani BD, et al. - In this study involving 500,769 participants enrolled in the UK Biobank, researchers investigated the association between multimorbidity (number/type), the presence of ≥ 2 long-term conditions (LTCs), and cause of mortality, and the impact of demographic factors on this connection. All-cause mortality was noted to be 2.9% (n=14,348). Morbidity combinations that involved cardiometabolic conditions, chronic kidney disease, cancer, epilepsy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, osteoporosis, and connective tissue disorders had the greatest effect on all-cause mortality for those with four or more LTCs. The investigators observed an association of multimorbidity with higher all-cause/cancer/vascular mortality. Type of LTCs may play an important role in understanding the link between multimorbidity and mortality as opposed to a number. Younger participants, especially men, with an increasing number of LTCs, were found to have a relatively higher mortality risk.
