Relationship between leisure time physical activity, sedentary behaviour and symptoms of depression and anxiety: Evidence from a population-based sample of Canadian adolescents
BMJ Open Oct 23, 2018
Bélair MA, et al. - Researchers examined the cross-sectional relationship between physical activity, sedentary activity, and symptoms of depression and anxiety in 9,702 adolescents aged 14-15 years who responded to questions regarding symptoms of depression and anxiety in the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) from 1996-2009. Findings revealed that physical inactivity and sedentary activity were significantly associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The authors noted that the significance of distinguishing these two behaviors may have important implications for research and policies focusing on physical activity and mental health in youth.
