Relationship between legume consumption and metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Oct 19, 2019
Jiang YT, Zhang JY, Liu YS, et al. - Researchers examined the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in correlation with legume consumption, by analyzing data from four cross-sectional, two cohort and one case-control study including a total of 56,028 participants, identified from PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases. In addition to using data from the studies included, they performed quality evaluations. They used a random-effects model to calculate summary odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. They also performed publication bias, subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Findings revealed no link between legume intake and odds of MetS. There is a need to validate this finding in well-designed cohort investigations and randomized clinical trials with accurate measurement of legume consumption and strict control of confounders.
