Relationship between knee joint contact forces and external knee joint moments in patients with medial knee osteoarthritis: Effects of gait modifications
Osteoarthritis and Cartilage May 03, 2018
Richards RE, et al. - Authors assessed the association between the knee contact force (KCF) and knee adduction and flexion moments (KAM and KFM) during normal gait in people with medial knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and estimated the effects on the KCF of walking with a modified gait pattern. They also ascertained the relationship between changes in the KCF and changes in the knee moments. Findings suggested that KAM was a reasonable substitute for the medial contact force at the first peak, but not at the second peak. To the medial KCF, first peak KFM was also a significant contributor. The ratio of the medial to total KCF, but not the medial KCF itself was reduced by walking with a modified gait at the first peak. Experts noted a moderate association of the changes in KAM during modified gait with changes in the medial KCF at the first peak.
