Relationship between intact parathyroid hormone and all-cause death, cardiovascular events, and ectopic calcification in patients with diabetic kidney disease: A retrospective study

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 24, 2021

Li M, Cheng J, Zhao J, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to examine the association between intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels and all-cause death, cardiovascular events, and ectopic calcification in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). They gathered clinical information from 508 patients with clinically diagnosed DKD. The authors discovered that iPTH was a risk factor for all-cause death and cardiovascular events. Meanwhile, the duration of diabetes, triglycerides, and iPTH levels were all independent risk factors for ectopic calcification. Patients with higher iPTH levels (iPTH ≥ 31.7 pg/mL) had an increased ectopic calcification rate and a shorter survival time than patients with lower iPTH levels (iPTH < 31.7 pg/mL). Higher iPTH levels were found to be significantly associated with worse clinical outcomes in DKD patients.
