Relationship between current smoking, visual CT findings and emphysema index in cigarette smokers
Clinical Imaging Dec 07, 2018
Jou SS, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if the visual CT findings could account for the effect of current smoking. For this investigation, researchers visually evaluated 500 CT scans within each lobe. After adjustment with confounders and visual parameters, the effect of current smoking on the emphysema index decreased. It was considered that due to the inflammation of airway by current smoking there was a drop in emphysema index. As compared to former smokers, current smokers showed 23% less visual emphysema, 19% more airway wall thickening, and 188% more centrilobular nodule. They suggested that visual CT findings could somewhat account for the effect of current smoking.
