Relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, intracerebral hemorrhage, and its location
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Aug 07, 2019
Tuttolomondo A, Di Raimondo D, Casuccio A, et al. - Using data from all consecutive patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) admitted from 2005 to 2014, researchers assessed the link between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) and ICH and various locations of ICH (ganglionic/internal capsule, brainstem/cerebellum, or lobar) in this retrospective study. A scale showing the degree of adherence to the traditional MeDi Score was created. Significant associations of smoking, diastolic blood pressure, and the MeDi Score with ICH were revealed in a multiple regression analysis. The lobar location group vs the ganglionic/internal capsule group showed a significantly lower mean MeDi Score. According to the findings, patients with lower adherence to MeDi exhibited a higher prevalence of ICH; this is likely associated with the fact that a worse cardiovascular risk profile with increased risk factors such as hypertension and dyslipidemia was observed among patients with lower MeDi Score.
