Relation of obstructive sleep apnea to risk of hospitalization in patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction from the National Inpatient Sample
The American Journal of Cardiology May 19, 2018
Abdullah A, et al. - Using data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for the years 2012 to 2014, researchers determined the impact of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) on hospitalization for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). They identified discharges (age ≥18 years) associated with OSA and HFpEF using ICD-9-CM codes (327.23 and 428.3x) respectively. The rates of admission for HFpEF were compared between patients with and without OSA, using propensity score analysis adjusting for age, sex, race and comorbidities. A prevalence of 16.8% was reported for OSA among patients with HFpEF. OSA was found to be related to increased risk of hospitalization with HFpEF.
