Relation of isolated systolic hypertension and pulse pressure to high sensitivity cardiac troponin-T and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide in older adults (from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study)
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 28, 2019
Madan N, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis that included older adults, researchers assessed the associations of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) and widened pulse pressure (PP) with hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP levels. Overall 5,251 participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study were recruited. These subjects (mean age: 75 years) attended visit 5 (2011-2013) and did not have a history of heart failure. Of the overall cohort, 24.7% had ISH and 30.3% had PP ≥ 70 mmHg. They found a relatively common prevalence of ISH and wide PP in older adults despite contemporary blood pressure treatment. Findings also revealed the associations of ISH and wide PP with abnormalities in hs-cTnT and NT-pro BNP in these subjects.
