Relation of iron and zinc deficiencies to the occurrence of febrile convulsions

Journal of Pediatric Neurosciences Aug 26, 2019

Hameed ZAA, et al. - Researchers examined how iron deficiency and zinc deficiency are associated with febrile convulsions. They performed a cross-sectional study including 100 children from the pediatric hospital in Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt; 50 children with febrile convulsions made up the study group and 50 febrile children without convulsions were the control group. Cases vs controls had significantly lower mean value of hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration iron, and ferritin. Cases vs controls had significantly lower mean value of zinc. Findings suggest lower levels of iron and zinc may predispose children to have febrile convulsions.
