Relation between functional coronary artery stenosis and graft occlusion after coronary artery bypass grafting

Hwang HY, Paeng JC, Kang J, et al. - In this study, graft patency rates were determined during the 5 years after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) according to the functional significance of the coronary artery stenosis, as determined by myocardial single-photon emission computed tomography(SPECT). Researchers here enrolled a total of 295 patients who underwent CABG employing Y-composite grafts based on the in situ left internal thoracic artery, and had preoperative stress/rest myocardial SPECT and 1-year angiographies available. Construction of 769 and 262 distal anastomoses was done to ischemic and nonischemic areas, respectively. Graft occlusion rates of 4.3% (44 of 1031 distal anastomoses) and 5.5% (45/820) were recorded at 1- and 5-year, respectively. The functional significance of coronary artery stenosis, especially when the stenosis degree was not severe, was noted to correlate with the graft occlusion during the 5 years after CABG.
