Regular use of proton pump inhibitors and risk of type 2 diabetes: Results from three prospective cohort studies
Gut May 12, 2021
Yuan J, He Q, Nguyen LH, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective study of 204,689 participants free of diabetes in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), NHS II and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, to examine whether regular use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. They assessed hazard ratios adjusting for demographic factors, lifestyle habits, the presence of comorbidities, employment of other medications and clinical indications. Findings revealed a higher risk of type 2 diabetes in relation to regular use of PPIs, and the risk was shown to elevate with longer duration of use. Thus, clinicians are advised to exercise caution when prescribing PPIs, especially for long-term use.
