Regular aspirin use and gene expression profiles in prostate cancer patients
Cancer Causes and Control Jun 21, 2018
Stopsack KH, et al. - Aspirin may confer prognostic benefits in prostate cancer, so researchers tested their hypothesis that aspirin induces transcriptional changes in tumors or normal prostate tissue. During follow-up of the Physicians’ Health Study 1 (PHS, n = 149) (initially a randomized controlled trial of aspirin) they performed an analysis of the prostatic transcriptome from men diagnosed with prostate cancer. They performed a systematic literature review and used a drug target database in order to identify aspirin target genes. They found that ribosome function in prostate tumors could be influenced by regular aspirin use. They also observed similar expression of other putative target genes in tumors from aspirin users and non-users. If corroborated, the benefits of aspirin could be limited to a subset of patients.
