Refractive status during pregnancy in the United States: Results from NHANES 2005–2008
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Dec 16, 2019
Wu F, et al. - Given the implications of refractive stability during pregnancy in both prescribing of refractive correction and candidacy for refractive surgery, researchers analyzed a nationally representative sample of US pregnant women in order to assess refractive status in this population. They report results from the NHANES. Participants were females aged 20–44 years with available vision examination data. Refractive change stratified by trimester of pregnancy was the primary outcome. They matched 301 pregnant women to 301 nonpregnant controls depending on age, ethnicity, and education. Findings revealed greater refractive difference from prior spectacle prescription later in pregnancy in pregnant women, however, a variable and non-significant direction of this change was also observed. Given concerns that refractive error swings in pregnancy, a longer time to last glasses prescription later in pregnancy may be indicated by this finding.
