Reduction of intraocular pressure after bariatric surgery
Acta Ophthalmologica Mar 06, 2018
Burgansky-Eliash Z, et al. - Authors sought to investigate the impacts of bariatric surgery on intraocular pressure (IOP) in obese patients who underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure. After 3–6 months of the procedure they noted a significant decrease in IOP. In obese individuals with ocular hypertension, significant weight loss could have beneficial effects on IOP which could enable avoidance of antiglaucoma medications. When considering bariatric surgery in such patients, the high likelihood of a reduction in IOP should be taken into account.
