Reduction of computed tomography use for pediatric closed head injury evaluation at a non-pediatric community emergency department
Academic Emergency Medicine Nov 21, 2018
Puffenbarger MS, et al. - Researchers assessed the clinical utility of implementing a Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN)-based closed head injury assessment tool for the safe reduction of computed tomography (CT) use for pediatric head injury evaluation at a non-pediatric community emergency department among 252 children with closed head injury. They determined the baseline head CT use at the participating emergency department for study participants through retrospective chart review from March 2014 through November 2015. Findings revealed a reduction in head CT use in correlation with the implementation of the PECARN-based Pediatric Closed Head Injury Assessment Tool in the non-pediatric emergency department. They observed the greatest effects among pediatric patients aged ≥ 24 months who were at very low risk for clinically important traumatic brain injury.
