Reducing unnecessary neonatal testing in infants of mothers with thyroid disease
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Mar 19, 2020
Churcher LM, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to investigate the numbers of asymptomatic infants < 8 weeks who, in addition to the newborn screening test, had appropriate thyroid function tests (TFTs), due to maternal thyroid disease, before and after the implementation of an updated institutional guideline and staff education. As part of a quality improvement project, a medical record audit of infants < 8 weeks born in a metropolitan teaching hospital, who had TFTs between July 1, 2017 and October 31, 2017, was performed. According to findings, baseline audit showed unnecessary neonatal thyroid function testing of healthy babies. Implementation of an updated guideline and a brief, targeted education package effectively increased understanding of the updated guidelines, minimized unnecessary testing and resulted in improved practice.
