Reducing rates of operative intervention for pediatric post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage
The Laryngoscope Apr 14, 2018
Whelan RL, et al. - Researchers ascertained the frequency of rebleeding in patients admitted for observation after the presentation for nonactive hemorrhage in the post-tonsillectomy period. They also compared the rebleeding rates between patients managed with observation vs initial operative control and described the complication profile related to observation as a management strategy for post-tonsillectomy bleeding. In patients undergoing initial observation, the frequency of rebleeding requiring operative control was 6.9%. Findings suggested that in patients observed for nonactive post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage, rates of rebleeding were not statistically different than those managed with initial operative exploration. As per the data, when compared to operative management for pediatric patients presenting with nonactive post-tonsillectomy bleeding, observation could have comparable safety and efficacy.
