Reducing preoperative anxiety with Child Life preparation prior to intravenous induction of anesthesia: A randomized controlled trial
Paediatric Anaesthesia Apr 10, 2020
West N, et al. - Researchers investigated if anxiety before intravenous induction of anesthesia could be reduced by preoperative Child Life preparation. In this randomized controlled trial, they included children aged 3‐10 years undergoing elective day surgery lasting ≤ 2 hours. The participants did not have any known preexisting anxiety and had no preoperative anxiolytics. Randomly, the child was allocated to intervention (minimum 15 minutes Child Life preparation) or control (standard practice without Child Life preparation). In this pediatric population, a statistically significant impact of a brief, targeted Child Life preparation session on decreasing preoperative anxiety before intravenous induction of anesthesia was revealed. The likely clinical significance of this effect was suggested and it also indicates the ability of Child Life as a valuable component of pediatric surgical care.
