Reducing preoperative anxiety with Child Life preparation prior to intravenous induction of anesthesia: A randomized controlled trial
Paediatric Anaesthesia Jan 30, 2020
West N, et al. - By performing this randomized controlled trial among children aged 3-10 years, with no recognized preexisting anxiety and no preoperative anxiolytics, undergoing elective day surgery lasting ≤ 2 hours, researchers investigated if preoperative Child Life preparation decreases anxiety before intravenous induction of anesthesia. Employing the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale—Short Form (observational scores from 22.9, minimal anxiety, to 100, maximal anxiety), experts evaluated each child's baseline anxiety in the anesthetic care unit. The study was completed by 59 children aged median [interquartile range] 5 [3-7] years. Findings revealed a statistically significant influence of a brief, targeted Child Life preparation session on decreasing preoperative anxiety before intravenous induction of anesthesia in young children, with no known preexisting anxiety. The value of Child Life as a part of pediatric surgical care was indicated by this effect.
