Reducing acute hospitalization length of stay after total knee arthroplasty: A quality improvement study
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 30, 2020
Gleicher Y, Siddiqui N, Mazda Y, et al. - This quality improvement project was intended to decrease the acute hospitalization length of stay to less than 2 days and decrease the percentage of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients discharged to inpatient rehabilitation using enhanced recovery after surgery bundle. In the analysis, January to December 2017 was the pre-intervention period and the post-intervention period was January 2018 to August 2019. Researchers conducted a root cause analysis by a multidisciplinary team to distinguish barriers for rapid recovery and discharge. The pre-intervention and post-intervention groups enrolled 232 and 383 patients, respectively. After TKA, significant improvements in the recovery of patients were achieved by conducting a root cause analysis and implementing a multidisciplinary, patient-centered enhanced recovery after surgery bundle.
