Reduced uterine volume after induction of puberty in women with hypogonadism
Clinical Endocrinology Sep 12, 2019
Burt E, Davies MC, Yasmin E, et al. - In this single centre, retrospective, cross sectional study, researchers evaluated uterine size using ultrasound in those who had undergone pubertal induction treatment compared with a reference group who had experienced spontaneous puberty. The study sample consisted of women who had pubertal induction compared with a reference group. Participants in the study were 95 women with hypogonadism who had earlier undergone pubertal induction and were receiving maintenance oestrogen replacement as adults. In those with hypogonadism, uterine growth is often compromised in spite of standard oestrogen therapy. In pubertal induction protocols, however, uterine health has historically been overlooked with increasing options for fertility treatment, adequate development of the uterine is crucial. A more tailor-made approach to therapy with periodic surveillance of uterine dimensions should be proposed given the variability in uterine size observed.
