Reduced T cell immunity in unmedicated, comorbidity-free obsessive-compulsive disorder: An immunophenotyping study

Journal of Psychiatric Research Apr 04, 2021

Subbanna M, Shivakumar V, Jose D, et al. - The pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is described to be significantly impacted by immune system aberrations, so researchers recruited 13 drug-naïve/free OCD patients and 26 age and gender matched healthy controls with the aim to determine the profile of immune cell subsets in peripheral blood of un-medicated OCD patients. Individuals with OCD showed a significantly reduced percentage of T regulatory (Treg) cells relative to healthy control individuals. Findings overall suggest a crucial role of Treg cells in regulating the immune response via suppression of the functional activities of T cells. Essentially a dysregulated T cell and/or T cell mediated immune activation is indicated by a lower Treg cell population in drug-naïve OCD patients. .
