Reduced risk of sepsis after prostate biopsy using a cephalosporin/fluoroquinolone antibiotic regimen and isopropyl alcohol needle washing
Urology Mar 04, 2018
Simmons MN, et al. - Experts aimed to compare 3 prophylactic regimens (ciprofloxacin 500mg PO BID for 4 days starting the day prior to biopsy and gentamicin 80mg IM 20 minutes prior to biopsy; ciprofloxacin 500mg PO BID for 4 days starting the day prior to biopsy and ceftriaxone 1g IM 20 minutes prior to biopsy; ciprofloxacin 500mg PO BID for 4 days starting the day prior to biopsy and ceftriaxone 1g IM 20 minutes prior to biopsy and isopropyl alcohol needle washing) to evaluate their effect on post-biopsy sepsis incidence. Results suggested a notable reduction in the incidence of sepsis following prostate biopsy using a combination of a ciprofloxacin/ceftriaxone antibiotic regimen and isopropyl alcohol needle washing. It was discovered that the technique used for needle washing was inexpensive and quick and could be easily adopted into current biopsy protocols.
