Reduced risk of gastrointestinal bleeding associated with proton pump inhibitor therapy in patients treated with dual antiplatelet therapy after myocardial infarction
European Heart Journal Mar 14, 2019
Sehested TSG, et al. – Via analysis of Danish nationwide registries, researchers assessed the utility of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) as preventives against upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding in patients on dual antiplatelet treatment (DAPT) post-myocardial infarction (MI) in relation to current European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommendations. Subjects receiving DAPT 7 days after hospital discharge for an acute MI were included in this analysis; those receiving anticoagulation therapy were excluded. In patients treated with DAPT following MI, less use of PPIs than suggested by guidelines was reported. Generally, an attenuated risk of UGI bleeding was observed in relation to PPI therapy.
