Reduced retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in ALS patients: A window to disease progression
Journal of Neurology May 04, 2018
Rohani M, et al. - Using the revised ALS functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R), experts gauged the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and compared it to healthy controls to find any possible links between RNFL thickness in ALS patients and disease duration and severity. Compared to healthy controls, RNFL thickness in ALS patients was reduced. In ALS patients, optical coherence tomography has potential as a marker of neurodegeneration and disease progression. Differences were seen in the RNFL thickness of the right and left eyes of ALS patients, indicating that asymmetric CNS involvement in ALS goes beyond the motor system.
