Reduced cement volume does not affect screw stability in augmented pedicle screws
European Spine Journal Mar 26, 2020
Weiser L, Sellenschloh K, chel K, et al. - In this study, the effect of different cement volumes on pedicle screw fatigue strength was explored. Researchers obtained 25 human vertebral bodies (T12–L4) from donors between 73 and 97 years of age. Quantitative CT identified Bone density. Conventional pedicle screws instrumented vertebral bodies, and unilateral cement augmentation was conducted. Pedicle screw stability was significantly increased by cement augmentation. The advantage of augmentation on screw anchorage was not significantly influenced by decreasing the applied volume of cement from 3 ml to 1 ml. They recommend the usage of a reduced volume of 1 ml bone cement for each pedicle screw recognizing the high risk of cement leakage during augmentation.
